Committees

SEG Committees are a primary and recognized vehicle for identifying the opportunities and challenges facing the Society. They bring together leaders from all levels of the minerals industry to explore the many facets of the industry and help SEG make the best decisions in moving the association forward.

SEG Committees

The Audit Committee shall provide independent financial oversight on behalf of the Council, the Publications Board, the members, and the Trustees of the Society of Economic Geologists Foundation. The Audit Committee shall consist of three members, including the Chair, each appointed for a three-year term, renewable at the discretion of the Council. The Council, the Publications Board, and the Trustees of the Society of Economic Geologists Foundation shall each designate one member to serve on this committee. The Chair of the Audit Committee and Secretary shall, subject to Council approval, be elected annually by the committee members.

The Budget Committee shall provide the Council with annual budgets for both the Society of Economic Geologists and the Society of Economic Geologists Foundation. The Budget Committee shall consist of the Treasurer, who shall be Chair, the Executive Director, one member designated by the Publications Board, and one member designated by the Society of Economic Geologists Foundation. Apart from the Treasurer and the Executive Director, Committee members will serve for a three-year term renewable at the discretion of the Council.

The Committee on Committees shall consist of six members, including a Chair, selected by the President-Elect in consultation with the President, and approved by the Executive Committee. Members of the Committee shall serve a one-year term and shall be appointed no later than January 31 of the year in which the President-Elect takes office. The committee membership shall reflect the main fields and geographic distribution of Society membership. The committee shall provide the President-Elect with a list of nominees who have agreed to serve, subject to approval by the Council, for those standing committee positions that will become open at the beginning of the President-Elect’s term as President, except for ex officio positions or those appointed directly by the President. The nominations of the committee shall be presented to the President-Elect and Executive Director by August 31 of the year of appointment of the committee.

The committee shall promote participation in the Society by early career professionals through increased involvement in activities and events that bridge the gap between students and senior professionals. The committee is responsible for advising the SEG Council on the concerns of early career professionals and will assist with the implementation of proposed innovations and changes to the Society and Foundation programs to benefit young talent throughout the industry.

The committee shall consist of six to eight members, including a Chair, a Chair-Elect, and a Past-Chair position. The committee Chair is responsible for organizing and guiding the committee toward developing its annual agenda and achieving its goals. Learn more.

The Education and Training Committee shall develop and maintain a curriculum of short courses, workshops, field trips, and field courses/camps to address the need for worldwide education and training in economic geology at both a basic and advanced level. The Education and Training Committee shall provide the Council with periodic reports and be responsible for coordinating a three-year curriculum with the activities of the Program Committee. The Education and Training Committee shall consist of the President-Elect, typically as Chair, the President, Past President, one member designated by the Publications Board, the Field Trip Coordinator, two Members-at-Large, the Executive Director, and a non-voting Program Coordinator.

The Executive Committee shall have the authority to direct, either separately or in conjunction with the Council, the affairs of the Society, subject to the limitations imposed by Section 9.3 and excepting the powers and privileges exclusively reserved for the Council by these Bylaws or the Articles of Incorporation. The Executive Committee shall consist of the President, who shall be Chair, President-Elect, Past President, Vice President for Regional Affairs, Vice President for Student Affairs, Chair of the Publications Board, and the Treasurer. The Executive Director shall be an ex officio nonvoting member of the Executive Committee.

The Fellowship Admissions Committee shall consider all applications for Fellowship and shall pass upon applicants in accordance with Section 3.1(a). The committee shall consist of six members including a Chair, with one or two appointments to be made annually to maintain the number. Each committee member will serve a three-year term renewable at the discretion of the President-Elect and the Council. At least one committee member, but not more than two, shall also be a Councilor.

The Investment Committee shall act as investment adviser to the Council and under its direction shall manage the investment portfolio of the Society. The Committee shall consist of between five and seven members, including the Chair, each appointed for a three-year term, renewable at the discretion of the Council. At least one member shall be a member of the Council, and one member shall be designated by the Society of Economic Geologists Foundation. Committee members shall be nominated by the Chair of the Investment Committee and approved by the Council. In addition, the Treasurer and Executive Director shall be ex officio voting members.

The Lindgren Award Committee is responsible for soliciting nominations for the Lindgren award, as described in Article X, Section10.1(d), and shall consist of six members, including a Chair, each to serve a three-year term renewable at the discretion of the President-Elect and the Council. Two new members will be appointed each year

As referred to in Section 7.2(a) for the establishment, purposes and membership of the Nominating Committee: By January 31 of each year, the then Past President, in consultation with the President, shall select a committee consisting of six Fellows, five of whom shall be chosen from the Fellowship at large, and the sixth from the Councilors. The Past President shall chair the committee. Members of the committee shall serve a one-year term and shall provide the Past President with a list of nominees for each of the elective offices for the following Society Year. A report, including the slate of nominations, shall be submitted by the Past President to the Executive Director not later than May 31 of the year during which the committee serves.

The Regional Vice President Lecturer Sub-Committee is responsible for nominations for the annual lectureship as described in Article X, Section 10.1(g). The Committee shall consist of the Vice President for Regional Affairs, as ex officio Chair, and the Regional Vice Presidents.

The SEG Distinguished Lecturer Committee is responsible for soliciting nominations for the SEG Distinguished Lecturer, as described in Article X, Section 10.1(e). The committee shall consist of six members, including a Chair, representing the main fields and geographic distribution of Society membership, two to be appointed annually each for a three-year term renewable at the discretion of the President-Elect and the Council.

The Society Traveling Lecturers Committee includes the Thayer Lindsley Visiting Lecturer and the International Exchange Lecturer Sub-Committees as described in Article X, Section 10.1(f). The Committee shall consist of nine members, including the Vice President for Regional Affairs as ex officio Chair, representing the main fields and geographic distribution of Society membership, with three members to be appointed annually each for a three-year term. These Sub-Committees, along with the Regional Vice President Lecturer Sub-Committee as noted in Section 9.2(k), are responsible for soliciting lecturer nominations.

The Student Affairs Committee shall be responsible for relations between the Society and students, including establishment and operation of any student chapters, and shall advise the Council on ways and means to encourage student involvement in Society affairs. The committee shall consist of six members, including at least three from academia, and the Chair, Vice President for Student Affairs. Committee members, with the exception of the Chair, will serve for a three-year term renewable at the discretion of the President-Elect and the Council.

SEGF Committees

The Audit Committee is a joint committee of the Foundation and the Society, and shall provide independent financial oversight on behalf of the Members and Trustees of the Foundation and the members, Publications Board, and Council of the Society. The committee shall consist of three members, including the chairperson, each appointed for a three- year term. One member shall be appointed to serve on this committee by each of the Board, the Council of the Society, and the Publications Board of the Society. The chairperson of the committee, who shall also serve as secretary of the committee, shall be elected annually by the committee members, subject to approval by the Board and the Council of the Society.

The Budget Committee is a joint committee of the Foundation and the Society, and shall provide the Board with annual budgets for both the Foundation and the Society. The committee is responsible for developing a revolving three-year budget that takes into account the three-year plan of activities prepared by the Program Committee of the Society, and specific information provided by the Investment Committee. The committee shall consist of the Treasurer of the Society, who shall be the chairperson; the Executive Director of the Society; one member designated by the Publications Board of the Society; and one member representing the Foundation to be appointed by the Board. The Foundation representative will serve for a three-year term renewable at the discretion of the Board.

The Executive Committee shall have the authority to direct, either separately or in conjunction with the Board, the affairs of the Foundation, subject to the limitations imposed by Section 7.3 and excepting the powers and privileges exclusively reserved for the Board by these Bylaws or the Articles of Incorporation. The committee shall consist of the President, who shall be the chairperson, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Past President of the Foundation. The Executive Director of the Society shall be an ex officio non-voting member of the committee.

The Fundraising Committee shall consist of at least three current Trustees, with the members and chairperson to be appointed annually by the President. The Executive Director of the Society shall be an ex officio voting member of the committee.

The Graduate Student Fellowship Committee shall be responsible for coordinating the various graduate student fellowships awarded annually by the Foundation. The committee shall consist of at least three members, including a chairperson, to be appointed by the President and confirmed annually by the Board. Additional members may be invited by the chairperson to serve on the committee.

The Investment Committee is a joint committee of the Foundation and the Society, and shall act as investment advisor to both organizations and shall manage their respective investment portfolios. The committee shall consist of five members, including the chairperson, each appointed for a three-year term, renewable at the discretion of the Council of the Society and the Board. At least one member shall be a member of the Council of the Society and one member shall be designated by the Board. Committee members shall be nominated by the chairperson of the committee and approved by the Council of the Society and the Board. The Treasurer of the Foundation and the Executive Director of the Society shall be ex officio voting members. Subject to annual approval by the Board, the Foundation will delegate authority to manage its financial assets to the committee.

The McKinstry Fund Committee shall administer the Hugh Exton McKinstry Fund in accordance with the agreement dated February 4, 1985, as amended and restated on August 17, 1991 (the "fund agreement"). The committee shall consist of five members, including the chairperson, who need not be Trustees but must be Fellows of the Society, each appointed by the President and subject to the approval of the Board as set forth in Section 7.1 above, for a five-year term, renewable at the discretion of the President. The chairperson shall be responsible for carrying out the duties of the committee in a timely manner. Additions to the committee membership may be proposed by the chairperson, and appointed as set forth in Section 7.5 Vacancies below. The committee, with advice from the Board, shall establish procedures for processing the grant applications that it receives and is charged with the determination of those proposals judged to be the most deserving in accordance with the wishes of Hugh and Elizabeth McKinstry as stated in the fund agreement. The list of proposals so selected each year shall be transmitted by the committee to the Board for final approval. As needed, expenses of the committee, not to exceed $3,500.00 per year (adjusted annually for inflation after 1991), may be paid from income from the Hugh Exton McKinstry Fund. Funds in the Hugh Exton McKinstry Fund shall be incorporated as part of the Foundation's endowment, but shall be separately managed and accounted for each year. Investment of the funds shall be the responsibility of the Investment Committee referenced in subsection (h) below.

The Nominating Committee shall consist of a representative of each of the classes of elected Trustees, to be appointed by January 31 each year by the President who shall also designate one as chairperson. The committee shall provide a list of nominees for each of the elective officers for the following Foundation Year. A report, including the slate of nominations, shall be submitted to the President not later than September 30 of the year during which the committee serves. Given the reduction of the number of elected Trustees from fifteen to nine described in Section 5.2 above, the Nominating Committee shall not be necessary or appointed to nominate elected Trustees to first hold office for the years 2018 or 2019.

The Student Field Trip Committee shall be responsible for the planning and administration of one or more field trips per annum to major mining districts around the world. The committee is responsible for the competitive selection and funding of students, and the selection of experienced mentors in addition to the field trip leader(s). The committee shall consist of at least three members, including a chairperson, to be appointed by the President and confirmed annually by the Board. Additional members may be invited by the chairperson to serve on the committee.

The Student Research Grants Committee shall be responsible for coordinating the various student research grants awarded annually by the Foundation, including those for the McKinstry Fund but excluding fellowships from the Graduate Student Fellowship Fund. The committee shall consist of at least three members, including the Vice President, and such other representatives as may be required by the respective administered funds of the Foundation. The chairperson shall be appointed by the President and confirmed annually by the Board.
