Description

SEG is pleased to offer the eigth Michael Fitzgerald Student Mapping Course. Michael "Mike" Fitzgerald, a University of Minnesota graduate, long supported field-based geologic studies by undergraduate and graduate students; through a generous donation orchestrated by his widow, Marisa de la Vega-Fitzgerald, SEG is funding a week-long mapping course for upper-division undergraduate, graduate students, and recent graduates. Participation is limited to 16 participants, and applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be an active SEG Student or Recent Graduate member for the 2024 calendar year. Please apply or renew your membership.
  • Must have completed at least one field mapping course (field camp not necessary)

Selection of participants is competitive; travel grants are awarded only to qualifying students.

Included

SEG provides students and young professionals: Up to 70%-75% of the RT, economy-class airfare to/from ABQ; transportation ABQ-TorC-ABQ, double-occupancy lodging, breakfasts, and field lunches. SEG will provide map sheets and engineer's scales.

Not Included

Students are responsible for dinners, snacks, water, incidental expenses. SEG will provide a detailed list of field and safety items, but this initial list comprises the essential equipment requirements: 3H or harder pencils, colored pencils, clipboard, reflective vest, sturdy leather field boots, hardhat, gloves, long-sleeve shirts, eye protection, water bottle, and sunscreen. Each student must provide their own Brunton Standard Transit compass. This is the only compass allowed and you must have one to apply. SEG members receive a 20% discount on all Brunton products at segweb.org/brunton.

  • Selected Participant Notification: August 21, 2024
  • Accepted students must confirm participation by August 28, 2024.
  • Accepted students must pay the US$195 registration fee within 48 hours after the invoice is sent.

New for this trip: It is your responsibility to ensure you have a valid passport or to determine whether you require a travel visa to enter the United States. Once chosen, it is best to start this process immediately. If you have not yet arranged for a required appointment for a travel visa or passport, you may not have time to accomplish this prior to the trip. Do not delay in contacting your Embassy, as securing a passport/visa takes time. Visa invitation letters are ONLY provided upon your request, let us know if you will require one. Funds will NOT be sent until proof of the Visa is emailed, and extra for airfare prices going up will not be sent.
